Type a light level, choose the units, and see the result and the same value in every common unit. Lux and foot-candle both measure lumens per area, so the factor between them is just the square foot in square meters.

How to use it

  1. Type a number. A dot or a comma works as the decimal separator.
  2. Choose the unit you have and the unit you need. The ⇄ button swaps them.
  3. The table shows the same light level in all common units at once.

Conversion factors

Every unit is converted through lux (lumens per square meter).

Unit In lux
1 kilolux (klx) 1,000 lx
1 foot-candle (lm/ft²) 10.7639104167 lx
1 phot (lm/cm²) 10,000 lx
1 nox 0.001 lx

The foot-candle value comes from the exact foot: 1 ft = 0.3048 m, so 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² and 1 lm/ft² = 1 ÷ 0.09290304 lm/m².

Worked example

A light meter in a US workshop reads 75 foot-candles. In lux that is 75 × 10.7639 = 807.3 lux. The other direction: 300 lux is 300 × 0.09290304 = 27.9 foot-candles.

Tips

  • Meters usually show lux or foot-candles directly; check which before you compare with a recommendation.
  • The conversion does not depend on the color of the light or on the lamp; only the lumens-per-area definition is used.

Frequently asked questions

How many lux is one foot-candle?

1 foot-candle = 1 lumen per square foot = 1 ÷ 0.3048² = 10.7639 lux. Many people round it to 10.76 or, roughly, 10 lux.

How many foot-candles is 500 lux?

500 lux × 0.09290304 = 46.45 foot-candles. 500 lux is a commonly quoted light level for office desks in lux-based guidance.

What are phot and nox?

A phot is one lumen per square centimeter, or 10,000 lux. A nox is one thousandth of a lux (0.001 lx). Both are CGS-era units that are rarely used now.

Is lux the same as lumens?

No. Lumens measure the light a source emits; lux measures how much of it lands on each square meter of a surface. 1 lux = 1 lumen per m², so the same lamp gives fewer lux the further away the surface is.
