How to use it
- Type a number. A dot or a comma works as the decimal separator.
- Choose the unit you have and the unit you need.
- The table shows the same value in all common units at once.
Conversion factors
Every unit is converted through kg·m², using 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 ft = 0.3048 m and 1 in = 0.0254 m.
| Unit | In kg·m² |
|---|---|
| 1 g·cm² | 10⁻⁷ |
| 1 kg·cm² | 10⁻⁴ |
| 1 lb·in² | ≈ 0.000292640 |
| 1 lb·ft² | ≈ 0.0421401 |
| 1 slug·ft² | ≈ 1.355818 |
Worked example
A flywheel with I = 1 lb·ft² has 0.45359237 × 0.3048² ≈ 0.04214 kg·m², which is about 421,401 g·cm² or 144 lb·in².
Quick reference
- Rotational kinetic energy: E = ½ I ω²
- Torque and angular acceleration: τ = I α
- 1 kg·m² = 10,000 kg·cm² = 10⁷ g·cm²
