Torque converter

Type a torque, choose the units, and see the result and the same torque in every common unit. Handy for wrench settings and engine specs, which are given in N·m, lbf·ft or lbf·in depending on the maker.

How to use it

  1. Type a number. A dot or a comma works as the decimal separator.
  2. Choose the unit you have and the unit you need. The ⇄ button swaps them.
  3. The table below shows the same torque in all common units at once.

Conversion factors

Every unit is converted through the newton-metre.

Unit In N·m
1 kilonewton-metre 1,000
1 pound-foot (lbf·ft) 1.3558179483
1 pound-inch (lbf·in) 0.1129848290
1 kilogram-force metre 9.80665
1 ounce-force inch 0.0070615518

Worked example

A spec of 90 N·m is 90 / 1.3558179 = 66.38 lbf·ft, which is 66.38 × 12 = 796.6 lbf·in. A small screw at 12 ozf·in is 12 × 0.0070616 = 0.0847 N·m.

Quick reference

  • 1 lbf·ft = 12 lbf·in = 192 ozf·in
  • 1 N·m ≈ 0.7376 lbf·ft ≈ 8.851 lbf·in
  • 1 kgf·m ≈ 7.233 lbf·ft

Frequently asked questions

How many N·m is one lbf·ft?

1.3558179483 N·m (4.4482216152605 N × 0.3048 m). Going the other way, 1 N·m is about 0.7376 lbf·ft.

How do I convert lbf·ft to lbf·in?

Multiply by 12, since there are 12 inches in a foot. 25 lbf·ft is 300 lbf·in. Divide by 12 to go back.

What is the difference between a pound-foot and a foot-pound?

In torque, lbf·ft is force times a distance, a twisting effect. A foot-pound (ft·lbf) is also the unit of energy. The numbers convert the same way, but they measure different things.

What is a kgf·m?

A kilogram-force acting at one metre. It is exactly 9.80665 N·m because a kilogram-force is 9.80665 N. Older metric torque specs use it.

How many lbf·ft is 100 N·m?

73.756 lbf·ft (100 / 1.3558179483), or about 885 lbf·in. Always use the unit and figure printed in the manual of the part you are tightening.
