Electrical resistance converter

Type a resistance, choose the units, and see the same value in every common unit. Handy for resistor values, insulation tests and CGS conversions.

How to use it

  1. Type a number. A dot or a comma works as the decimal separator.
  2. Choose the unit you have and the unit you need. The ⇄ button swaps them.
  3. The table below shows the same value in all common units at once.

Conversion factors

Every unit is converted through the ohm (Ω).

Unit Value
1 milliohm (mΩ) 0.001 Ω
1 kilohm (kΩ) 1,000 Ω
1 megohm (MΩ) 1,000,000 Ω
1 gigohm (GΩ) 10⁹ Ω
1 abohm 10⁻⁹ Ω
1 statohm ≈ 8.98755 × 10¹¹ Ω

Worked example

A resistor marked 4.7 kΩ is 4.7 × 1,000 = 4,700 Ω. An insulation reading of 250 MΩ is 0.25 GΩ.

Quick reference

  • 1 MΩ = 1,000 kΩ = 1,000,000 Ω
  • Resistors in series add; in parallel the reciprocals add
  • R = V / I

Frequently asked questions

How many ohms are in a kilohm and a megohm?

One kilohm (kΩ) is 1,000 Ω and one megohm (MΩ) is 1,000,000 Ω, so 1 MΩ = 1,000 kΩ.

What is a statohm?

The CGS electrostatic unit of resistance, about 8.987551787 × 10¹¹ Ω. The value is c² × 10⁻⁵ with c the speed of light in m/s.

What is an abohm?

The CGS electromagnetic unit of resistance, equal to exactly 10⁻⁹ Ω (one nanoohm).

How is the ohm related to volts and amps?

By Ohm's law, R = V / I: one ohm is one volt per ampere.
