Magnetic field converter
Type a magnetic flux density, choose the units, and see the result and the same value in every common unit. One gauss is exactly 0.0001 tesla, and one gamma is one nanotesla.

How to use it
- Type a number. A dot or a comma works as the decimal separator.
- Choose the unit you have and the unit you need. The ⇄ button swaps them.
- The table shows the same flux density in all common units at once.
Conversion factors
Every unit is converted through the tesla.

Worked example
A magnetometer reads 50 μT. In gauss that is 50 × 10⁻⁶ ÷ 10⁻⁴ = 0.5 G, or 500 mG. A small fridge magnet near 5 mT is 50 G.
Tips
- Gauss is common in older literature and in some consumer meters; tesla is the SI unit.
- Milligauss readings of household fields are 1,000 times smaller than gauss ones: 1 G = 1,000 mG.
Frequently asked questions
How many gauss is 1 tesla?
1 T = 10,000 G. A gauss is exactly 10⁻⁴ tesla, so you multiply tesla by 10,000 to get gauss.
How many microtesla is 1 gauss?
1 G = 100 μT (0.0001 T). The Earth's field at the surface is often described as about 25 to 65 μT, which is 0.25 to 0.65 G.
What is a gamma in magnetism?
A gamma (γ) is an old geophysics unit equal to one nanotesla, 10⁻⁹ T. Magnetometer data in older papers is often given in gammas.
Is oersted the same as gauss?
No. The oersted measures the magnetic field strength H, the gauss measures flux density B. In vacuum 1 Oe corresponds to 1 G numerically, but they are different quantities, so this tool only converts flux density.
