Data storage converter
Type a size, choose the units, and see the result in every unit. Decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) and binary units (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes) are kept apart, so you can see exactly where the difference comes from.

How to use it
- Type a number. A dot or a comma works as the decimal separator.
- Choose the unit you have and the unit you need. The ⇄ button swaps them.
- The table below shows the same size in all common units at once.
Decimal and binary units
Every unit is converted through the byte. There are two families of prefixes:
| Decimal (SI) |
Bytes |
Binary (IEC) |
Bytes |
| kilobyte (kB) |
1,000 |
kibibyte (KiB) |
1,024 |
| megabyte (MB) |
1,000,000 |
mebibyte (MiB) |
1,048,576 |
| gigabyte (GB) |
1,000,000,000 |
gibibyte (GiB) |
1,073,741,824 |
| terabyte (TB) |
10¹² |
tebibyte (TiB) |
1,099,511,627,776 |
Bits are one eighth of a byte, so 1 Mbit = 125,000 bytes.
Worked example
A new 512 GB phone or SSD has 512 × 10⁹ bytes. Divided by 1,073,741,824 that is 476.8 GiB, which is what a binary-counting system reports. For a download: a 2 GB file on a 50 Mbit/s line is 16,000 Mbit ÷ 50 = 320 seconds at best, about 5 minutes 20 seconds.
Quick reference
- 1 byte = 8 bits
- 1 MB = 1,000 kB; 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB
- 1 TB ≈ 0.909 TiB ≈ 931.3 GiB
- 8 Mbit/s = 1 MB/s
Frequently asked questions
Why does my 1 TB drive show about 931 GB?
Drive makers use decimal units: 1 TB is 10¹² bytes. Some operating systems count in binary units (1 GiB = 2³⁰ bytes) and still print "GB", so 10¹² bytes shows as 931.3 GiB. The disk is not missing any space.
What is the difference between GB and GiB?
A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000,000,000 bytes. A gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes (1,024³), about 7.4% more. The IEC introduced the -bi names to tell the two apart.
How many MB are in a GB?
1,000 in the decimal system (SI), and 1,024 MiB in a GiB in the binary system. This converter shows both.
How do I convert megabits per second to megabytes per second?
Divide by 8. A 100 Mbit/s connection moves at most 12.5 MB per second. Internet speeds are quoted in bits, file sizes in bytes.
How many bits are in a byte?
Eight. A kilobit here is 1,000 bits, which is 125 bytes.
