FILETIME converter

Windows file times, .NET DateTime ticks and Chrome's WebKit timestamps all count tiny time units from different start dates. Paste a value and pick its format to get the UTC date, or type a date to get all three numbers plus Unix seconds.

Digits only for a timestamp, or a UTC date such as 2023-03-15 or 2023-03-15T18:30:00.1234567Z.

How to use it

  1. Paste a number and choose its format, or type a UTC date.
  2. Read the UTC date for a number, or the three numeric formats and Unix seconds for a date.

How it works

All three formats are a count of a fixed small unit from an epoch. The tool converts the count to 100 ns units since 1970, then back to each format. FILETIME and WebKit share the 1601 epoch, and WebKit counts microseconds, so it is the FILETIME divided by 10. .NET ticks start at year 1, which is 621 355 968 000 000 000 ticks before 1970. A date with up to seven fractional digits keeps its 100 ns detail.

Worked examples

  • FILETIME 133233120000000000 is 15 March 2023, 00:00:00 UTC.
  • The same moment is 638144352000000000 .NET ticks and 13323312000000000 in WebKit time.
  • The date 1970-01-01 is FILETIME 116444736000000000 and Unix time 0.

Good to know

These values are always in UTC. Time zones and daylight saving are applied only when software displays the date.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Windows FILETIME?

It is a 64-bit count of 100-nanosecond intervals since 1 January 1601 UTC. NTFS and many Windows APIs store file times this way. 116444736000000000 is the Unix epoch, 1 January 1970.

What are .NET ticks?

A tick is 100 nanoseconds. DateTime.Ticks counts them from 00:00:00 on 1 January 0001, so the Unix epoch is 621355968000000000 ticks.

What is WebKit time?

Chrome and other WebKit-based browsers store some timestamps, such as cookie and history dates, as microseconds since 1 January 1601 UTC. Divide a FILETIME by 10 to get the same moment in WebKit units.

Why is exact integer math used?

A FILETIME has 18 digits, more than a normal JavaScript number holds without rounding. The tool uses big integers, so even the last 100 ns digit is kept when you paste a value.
