Layover calculator

Enter the length of your layover and what it involves. The calculator sums up a realistic time for the connection, compares it with your layover and tells you whether it is comfortable, tight or too short.

How to use it

  1. Pick the kind of connection: domestic, international (one ticket) or separate tickets.
  2. Enter the layover as hours and minutes, from landing to the departure of the next flight.
  3. Switch on what applies: a terminal change, passport control or customs, and collecting bags.
  4. Add a delay of the first flight if there is one. Read the spare time and the verdict.

How the time is added up

The tool adds fixed amounts, all in minutes:

Part Minutes
Domestic connection 45
International connection 75
Separate tickets 120
Change of terminal 30
Passport control or customs 45
Collecting and re-checking bags 30
Delay of the first flight as entered

Spare time = layover − time needed. At least 30 minutes of spare time is shown as comfortable, 0 to 29 as tight, and below 0 as too short.

Worked example

An international connection with a terminal change and passport control needs 75 + 30 + 45 = 150 minutes. With a 2 h 30 min layover the spare time is 0 minutes, so the verdict is tight. A delay of 20 minutes would make it too short.

Good to know

These amounts are our own planning figures, not official data. Check the minimum connection time on your booking and the airport’s own information, and leave extra margin at large airports with long walks between gates.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the airline's minimum connection time?

No. Airlines publish minimum connection times per airport, and a through ticket on one booking is protected by them. This tool is a planning guide of its own and is not a rule of any airline or airport.

Why do separate tickets need so much more time?

With two separate bookings the airline is not responsible for the second flight if the first is late, and you usually must collect your bags and check in again. The tool plans 120 minutes as the base for that case.

What do the verdicts mean?

Comfortable means at least 30 minutes of spare time after everything you listed. Tight means between 0 and 30 minutes left. Too short means the needed time is more than the layover.

How should I use the delay field?

Enter the delay you already know of or want to plan for, in minutes. It is added to the time needed, so you can see how much late arrival your layover can absorb.
