  3. If the note about the cusp appears, your birthday is the first or last day of the sign.

Worked examples

15 May falls between 20 April and 20 May, so it is Taurus (earth, fixed). 21 March is the first day of Aries, and 20 March the last day of Pisces, so both are marked as a cusp.

About the dates

Printed ranges are a convention, not an exact astronomical fact. For a birth on a cusp, the exact moment the Sun changed sign in your birth year and your time zone decide the sign. Zodiac signs describe a tradition of astrology and are not scientific predictions.

Frequently asked questions

How is a zodiac sign worked out?

The Western (tropical) zodiac splits the year into twelve parts of about 30 days, starting at the March equinox with Aries. Your sun sign is the part your birthday falls in. The calculator uses the commonly printed date ranges.

Why do zodiac dates differ between websites?

The Sun enters each sign at a slightly different moment every year, and the calendar date also depends on the time zone. So a sign can start on the 20th, 21st or 22nd of the month, and lists round to the most common day.

What does it mean to be born on the cusp?

The cusp is the day when one sign ends and the next begins. If you were born on such a day, your sign may be the neighbouring one in your birth year. The tool marks the first and last day of each sign range.

Is this the same as the Chinese or sidereal zodiac?

No. This tool gives the Western tropical sign tied to the seasons. Sidereal (Vedic) signs are based on the stars and fall about three to four weeks later, and the Chinese zodiac follows the lunar year, see the Chinese zodiac tool.
