Flowchart maker

Describe the flow in plain text: each line is a chain of steps joined by arrows. The tool places the shapes in layers and draws the arrows, so there is nothing to drag. It works on a phone, and nothing is uploaded.

Write (Start) for an oval, [Step] or plain text for a box and {Question?} for a decision. Use -> between steps and -yes-> to label an arrow. Up to 40 steps.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Type the flow, one chain per line.
  2. Choose top-to-bottom or left-to-right.
  3. Download the PNG or SVG.

Shapes

  • (Start) an oval for the start or end.
  • [Step] or plain text a box for an action.
  • {Question?} a diamond for a decision.

How it works

Each step gets a layer: one more than the deepest step that points to it. Arrows that close a loop are ignored for layering and drawn around the outside.

Worked example

(Start) -> [Enter password] -> {Correct?} makes three layers. The line {Correct?} -no-> [Show error] -> [Enter password] sends the flow back, so that last arrow is drawn as a loop.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a flowchart?

Join steps with -> on one line, such as (Start) -> [Read input] -> {Valid?}. A step that appears again in another line, with the same text, is the same shape, so you can continue from it on a new line.

How do I show yes and no branches?

Put a label inside the arrow: {Valid?} -yes-> [Save]. The label is drawn on the arrow. Use one line per branch.

Can the flow loop back?

Yes. An arrow that returns to an earlier step is drawn around the edge of the chart so it does not cross the main path.

Why is there no dragging?

Layout is automatic: steps are put in layers by the longest path from the first step. Text input also works with a keyboard and on small screens. Change the order of lines or the direction to adjust the picture.
