Hangman game
A random everyday word is chosen for you, and you guess it one letter at a time with your keyboard or the on-screen letters. Six wrong guesses end the game. Switch to a custom word to let a friend guess something you typed.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Press letter keys or tap the letters. Letters you already used are greyed out: green if the word has them, red if not.
- Fill in all the blanks before the drawing is complete.
- Press New word to play again.
How it works
The word is shown as blanks. A correct letter appears in every place it occurs; a wrong letter adds one part to the gallows. After six wrong letters the game ends and the word is shown. Your guesses never leave the browser.
Example
For the word ICE CREAM, guessing E and C shows CE C_E_ with no misses. Guessing Z adds the first body part.
Tips
- Start with common letters such as E, A, R, T and O; they are the most frequent in English words.
- For a classroom, type vocabulary words yourself and have students guess in teams.
Frequently asked questions
How many wrong guesses are allowed?
Six. Each wrong letter adds one part to the drawing (head, body, two arms, two legs), and the game is lost on the sixth.
Can I play with a friend?
Yes. Choose "My own word or phrase", type a word while your friend looks away (the field hides what you type) and press Start game. A phrase with spaces works too.
What words are in the list?
About 80 common English nouns of 5 to 8 letters, such as apple, bridge, planet and violin. The word is picked in your browser when the page loads and when you press New word.
Can I use accented letters?
Accents are removed, so crème becomes CREME. Letters outside the Latin alphabet, digits and punctuation are dropped.
