How to use it

  1. Type one person per line.
  2. Put the top person’s manager as empty.
  3. Download the PNG or SVG.

How it works

The tool builds a tree from the manager links, checks for loops, then puts people with no reports side by side in order. A manager is centred over the first and last report. Connectors are a vertical line, a horizontal bar and a short vertical line to each report.

Worked example

In the default data Maria Lopez has two reports. James Carter has two reports (Tom and Anna) and Priya Patel has one (Li Wei), so there are three end columns and the chart has three levels.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter the data?

One line per person: name, manager, title. Example: Tom Reed, James Carter, Account manager. The manager must also be listed as a person on their own line.

Can there be more than one person at the top?

Yes. Everyone with an empty manager is drawn as a separate tree, side by side.

What if two people have the same name?

Names must be unique, because the manager column refers to them by name. Add a middle initial or a team to tell them apart.

How is the chart laid out?

People without reports take one column each, and every manager is centred above their reports. Each level of the hierarchy is one row.
