Timeline maker

Write one event per line: a date, a comma and the event. Events are sorted by date and drawn above and below the line. Choose even spacing or true scale. Nothing is uploaded.

Dates can be a year (1969), a month (1969-07) or a day (1969-07-20). Up to 24 events.

How to use it

  1. Type each event as date, text.
  2. Add a title and choose even spacing or to scale.
  3. Download the PNG or SVG.

How it works

Dates become a number of years: the year plus the month and day as a fraction of it. Events are sorted by this number. With to-scale spacing, the first event is at the left end and the last at the right end, and the others sit in proportion.

Worked example

With the defaults, Sputnik 1 (1957) and the first ISS module (1998) are the two ends. Apollo 11 (1969) is 12 of the 41 years from the left, so with to-scale spacing it sits at about 29% of the way along.

Frequently asked questions

Which date formats work?

A year such as 1969, a year and month such as 1969-07, or a full date such as 1969-07-20. The text of your date is shown as you typed it.

What does space by date do?

Off, the events are spaced evenly in date order. On, the distance between markers is proportional to the time between them, so close events may be near each other and labels can overlap.

Are the events sorted?

Yes, by date. Two events with the same date keep the order you typed.

Can I print it?

Download the PNG or SVG and print that file. The chart is made on a white background.
