Spelling practice
Choose an easy, medium or hard list, or paste your own words. Your browser says each word, you type it and press Check. At the end you see your score and the words to review.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Pick a list, or choose My own list and paste your words.
- Press Start. The first word is spoken. Press Hear the word or Hear it slowly to repeat it.
- Type the word and press Enter or Check. See whether it was right, then press Next word.
- At the end, review the words you missed and practise again; the order is shuffled each time.
The lists
- Easy has 30 short, common words such as friend, people and because.
- Medium has everyday words that trip people up, such as calendar, height and neighbor.
- Hard has words that are often misspelled, such as accommodate, rhythm and separate.
All lists use US spelling.
Worked example
You practise the easy list of 30 words and spell 27 right. The score reads 27 of 30, and the 3 missed words are listed with what you typed, so becuase next to because shows where the slip was.
Tips
- Say the word to yourself, then spell it in syllables before you type.
- Use the slow speed for long words.
- Paste the words from this week’s spelling test as your own list.
Frequently asked questions
How does the word reading work?
The page asks your browser's built-in speech synthesis to say the word in US English. No audio is downloaded from this site, and which voice you hear depends on your device.
What if I hear nothing?
Check that the volume is on and the device is not muted. Some browsers have no speech voices installed. The page tells you if none are found and lets you see each word for 2 seconds instead.
Does spelling have to match exactly?
Yes, apart from capital letters and spaces around the word. The word lists use US spelling, such as favorite and neighbor, so UK spellings are marked wrong.
Can I use my own spelling list?
Yes. Choose My own list, paste your words and press Start. Letters, apostrophes and hyphens are kept, other characters are dropped, and words are matched in lowercase.
Are my words stored anywhere?
No. The list and your answers stay on the page and are lost when you close it.
