Fraction visualizer
Enter two fractions and see each one shaded in a circle or a bar. The tool says which is larger or whether they are equal, and lists the simplest form, mixed number, decimal and percentage. Fractions larger than one are drawn as several whole shapes.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Enter the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom) of fraction A and of fraction B.
- Choose circles or bars.
- Read the comparison sentence and look at how much of each shape is shaded.
How it works
A fraction n/d is drawn as d equal parts with n of them shaded. If n is larger than d, additional whole shapes are added until all n parts are shown. The comparison multiplies across: n1 × d2 against n2 × d1. The simplest form divides both numbers by their greatest common divisor, found with Euclid’s algorithm.
Worked example
With the default 3/4 and 2/3: 3 × 3 = 9 is larger than 2 × 4 = 8, so 3/4 is greater than 2/3. In decimals 3/4 = 0.75 (75%) and 2/3 ≈ 0.6667 (66.67%).
Tips
- To check that two fractions are equal, look for the same amount of shading, then compare the simplest forms.
- Use bars to compare fractions with different denominators; the strips line up easily.
Frequently asked questions
How does the tool compare two fractions?
It cross-multiplies: a/b is compared with c/d by comparing a × d with c × b. Because only whole numbers are used there is no rounding. For 3/4 and 2/3 it compares 3 × 3 = 9 with 2 × 4 = 8, so 3/4 is greater.
Why can the denominator only go to 24?
Beyond about 24 parts a circle or bar is too thin to see the pieces. The limit keeps the picture readable on a phone. For bigger fractions, use the fraction calculator.
Can I draw improper fractions?
Yes, up to four wholes. 7/4 is drawn as one full circle and a second circle with 3 of 4 parts shaded, and shown as the mixed number 1 3/4.
What does simplest form mean?
Divide the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common divisor. 6/8 has a common divisor of 2, so its simplest form is 3/4. Equal fractions like 6/8 and 3/4 look the same when shaded.
How are the decimal and percentage rounded?
The decimal is rounded to four places and the percentage to two places, with no trailing zeros. So 2/3 shows 0.6667 and 66.67%.
