GPA calculator

Add your courses with their credits and letter grades to get your grade point average on the US 4.0 scale. Switch on the weighted scale to give honors and AP courses extra points, and add your earlier GPA and credits for a cumulative result.

How to use it

  1. Enter the credits and letter grade for each course. Add or remove rows as needed.
  2. For a weighted GPA, switch on the weighted scale and set each course’s level.
  3. To include earlier terms, enter your previous GPA and credits.
  4. Read your GPA and, if given, the cumulative GPA.

How it works

GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits

Grade points follow the common unweighted 4.0 scale with plus and minus: A+/A 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D− 0.7, F 0.0. The weighted scale adds 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP/IB to passing grades.

Cumulative GPA = (previous GPA × previous credits + new points) ÷ (previous credits + new credits)

Worked example

Four courses: Math 3 credits A, English 3 credits B+, History 3 credits A−, Biology 4 credits B.

  • points: 3 × 4.0 + 3 × 3.3 + 3 × 3.7 + 4 × 3.0 = 12 + 9.9 + 11.1 + 12 = 45
  • credits: 13
  • GPA = 45 ÷ 13 = 3.46

Limits and tips

  • There is no single national rule. Some schools stop at A = 4.0, others use A+ = 4.3, and weighting differs. Follow your school’s table.
  • Rows with empty credits are ignored, so you can leave spare rows blank.
  • This calculator is for planning. Official GPAs come from your school.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up and divide by the total credits. Three credits of A (4.0) and three credits of B (3.0) give (12 + 9) ÷ 6 = 3.5.

What are the grade points for each letter?

On the common 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades, A and A+ are 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D− 0.7 and F 0. Schools differ, for example some give A+ 4.3, so check your school's policy.

What is a weighted GPA?

Some schools add extra points for harder courses, commonly 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, so the GPA can go above 4.0. This calculator adds the bonus to every passing grade when you switch on the weighted scale. Your school's rule may differ.

How do I calculate a cumulative GPA?

Enter your GPA and credits so far. The calculator weights each by credits: (previous GPA × previous credits + new grade points) ÷ all credits.

How do I treat pass/fail courses?

Pass/fail courses usually do not count in GPA, so leave them out by clearing their credits. Schools differ on repeated courses too.
