Birthstone finder
Choose a month to see its birthstone and the stones added as alternates, plus the birth flowers usually paired with it. The stones follow the modern list used in the United States.

How to use it
- Open the month list and pick your birth month.
- Read the birthstone, the alternate stones and the two birth flowers.
How it works
The tool looks the month up in a fixed table. It does not calculate anything: the table is the modern US birthstone list with its alternates, together with the flowers most often paired with each month.
Worked example
March: the birthstone is aquamarine, the alternate is bloodstone, the birth flower is the daffodil and the other one is the jonquil. October: opal, with tourmaline as the alternate, and marigold or cosmos.
Tips for gifts
- When a month has alternates, ask which one the person likes: a stone chosen for colour is a better gift than one chosen for the list.
- Some stones, such as pearl and opal, are soft and need care in rings; a pendant or earrings wear better.
Frequently asked questions
Which birthstone list does this use?
The modern US list, which was first published by the National Association of Jewelers in 1912 and has gained alternates since, such as alexandrite for June, spinel for August and tanzanite for December. Other countries and traditions have different lists.
Why do some months have several birthstones?
Older traditional lists, other cultures and later updates all assign different stones. A month may have a main stone and alternates. This tool shows the main stone first and the alternates separately, so you can pick the one you like.
Are birth flowers official?
No. Birth flowers are a custom with several versions, and no body defines them. The flowers here are the pairings often listed in the United Kingdom and the United States, with one main flower and one other per month.
Does the birthstone depend on the day or only the month?
Only the month. The list does not change between the 1st and the 31st. Zodiac stones, which follow the star sign, are a separate tradition.
