Test score calculator
Enter the number of points on a test and how many you got right, or how many you got wrong, to see the percentage and letter grade. The scale starts at the standard US 90, 80, 70 and 60 cut-offs and you can change it. A table lists the grade for every possible score.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Enter the total points on the test.
- Choose whether you know the points correct or the points wrong, and enter them.
- Change the cut-offs if your school’s scale is different.
- Read the percentage, letter grade and the points needed for each letter. The table below shows the grade for every possible score.
How it works
Percent = points correct ÷ total points × 100
With “Points wrong”, correct = total − wrong. The letter is the first one whose cut-off the percent reaches; below the D cut-off the grade is F. The default cut-offs are the standard US scale: A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60.
The fewest points for a letter is the cut-off share of the total rounded up: for 50 points and a B at 80%, 0.8 × 50 = 40.
Worked example
A 50-point test with 43 points correct:
- percent = 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86% → B
- points lost: 7
- fewest points for an A: 0.9 × 50 = 45; for a B: 40; for a C: 35; for a D: 30
Limits and tips
- Partial credit works: enter points such as 42.5.
- The table is for tests with a whole number of points.
- For a single course grade built from many tests, use the grade calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a test score percentage?
Divide the points you got by the total points and multiply by 100. 43 out of 50 is 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86%. With the standard scale that is a B.
What is the standard letter grade scale?
In most US schools 90–100% is an A, 80–89% a B, 70–79% a C, 60–69% a D and below 60% an F. Many schools add plus and minus grades, and some use other cut-offs such as 93 for an A, so edit the scale to match your teacher's.
What if I know only how many questions I got wrong?
Switch to "Points wrong". The calculator subtracts the wrong points from the total: 7 wrong on a 50-point test is 43 correct, or 86%.
Does it round the percentage?
No. A score of 89.6% stays a B here, because teachers differ on rounding. The table shows percentages to one decimal.
How do I make a grading scale for a test?
Enter the total points. The "points for" lines show the fewest points that reach each letter, and the table lists the letter for every possible score. Tests of up to 500 whole points get a table.
