Words to pages converter
Enter a word count and pick a font, size and line spacing to see about how many pages it fills. It is an estimate based on a stated rule of thumb, so use it for planning and check the real count in your word processor.

How to use it
- Enter the number of words (the word counter on this site can count them).
- Choose the font, the size in points and the line spacing.
- Read the approximate pages, the number of pages rounded up, and the words per page assumed.
How it works
The starting point is the common rule that a page of Times New Roman 12 pt, single spacing, 1-inch margins holds about 500 words. For other settings the calculator scales that number:
words per page = 500 ÷ (font width factor × (size ÷ 12)² × spacing factor)
| Assumption |
Value |
| Base page |
500 words (Times New Roman, 12 pt, single, 1-inch margins) |
| Font width, relative to Times New Roman |
Times New Roman 1.00 · Calibri 1.05 · Arial 1.12 · Courier New 1.30 |
| Size effect |
Words per page change with the square of the size (wider letters and taller lines) |
| Line spacing factor |
Single 1.0 · 1.15 · 1.5 · Double 2.0 |
The font width factors are rough values chosen for this tool, not measurements of a particular document.
Worked example
1,000 words in Times New Roman 12 pt: single-spaced is 1,000 ÷ 500 = 2 pages, double-spaced is 1,000 ÷ 250 = 4 pages. 2,500 words in Arial 11 pt with 1.5 spacing: words per page = 500 ÷ (1.12 × (11 ÷ 12)² × 1.5) ≈ 354, so 2,500 ÷ 354 ≈ 7.1 pages, which is 8 pages when rounded up.
Limits
- Paragraph breaks, headings, lists and white space reduce the words per page, and dense text increases it.
- Page size differences between US Letter and A4 are not modelled.
- For a real count, paste your text into a word processor and check its page count.
Frequently asked questions
How many words are on a page?
A common rule is about 500 words for a single-spaced page and about 250 for a double-spaced page in Times New Roman 12 pt with 1-inch margins. Real pages vary with paragraph breaks, headings, images and the exact font.
How accurate is the result?
It is an estimate. The calculator starts from the 500-words-per-page rule and scales it for the font, size and spacing you pick, using approximate width factors. Your own document can differ by 10 to 20 percent or more.
Which settings do universities usually ask for?
Many assignments ask for 12 pt Times New Roman, double spacing and 1-inch margins, but requirements differ by school and style guide. Always follow your instructions – the calculator cannot know them.
Why does font size change the page count so much?
A bigger font makes the letters wider and the lines taller, so the effect on words per page grows with the square of the size. Going from 12 pt to 14 pt reduces the words per page to about 73 percent.
Do margins, headings and references count?
Not in this calculator. It assumes 1-inch margins and continuous text. Title pages, block quotes, tables, figures and bibliographies take space differently, so add a margin for them.
