Word scramble generator

Enter your words, one per line, and the tool mixes up the letters of each one. Print the worksheet with a line for each answer, and switch on the answer key for your own copy. Press Generate again for a different scramble of the same words.

Up to 40 words. Spaces in a phrase stay where they are; only the letters are mixed.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your words, one per line.
  2. Optionally add a title for the worksheet.
  3. Press Scramble again until you like the result, then Print.
  4. Turn on the answer key and print a second copy for the teacher.

How it works

Words are turned into capital letters, duplicates are removed, and for each word the letters are shuffled with the Fisher–Yates method using your browser’s secure random numbers. If the shuffle gives back the original word it is repeated, and as a last resort two different letters are swapped, so the scramble always differs when the letters allow it.

Worked example

“PLANET” might become “NTLAEP”. Its answer line sits beside it, and the answer key shows PLANET. The number of letters is unchanged, so students can count them.

Tips

  • Choose words of 5 to 8 letters for younger students; very short words are often guessed at once.
  • Group the list by topic and put the topic in the title as a clue.

Frequently asked questions

Will a word ever come out unscrambled?

No, unless it cannot change. A word is reshuffled until it differs from the original, so only words with a single repeated letter, like “AA”, or one letter come out the same.

Can I scramble phrases?

Yes. The letters of a phrase are mixed but the spaces stay in their places, so “ICE CREAM” keeps a gap after the third letter. The worksheet shows capital letters.

How many words can I use?

Up to 40. Repeated words are removed and blank lines are ignored. You can also separate words with commas or semicolons.

How do I print a teacher copy?

Print the worksheet first with the answer key off, then switch the key on and print again. Only the worksheet is printed, without the settings.

Is each worksheet different?

Yes. The letters are shuffled at random in your browser, so Scramble again gives a new arrangement every time. Nothing is sent to a server.
