How to use it
- Choose 30, 60 or 120 seconds.
- Click the field and type the word with the green outline. The timer starts with your first letter.
- Press Space after every word. Correct words turn green, wrong ones red and crossed out.
- When the time runs out you see your speed, accuracy and the number of correct words. New test shuffles the words again.
How the score works
The test uses the usual convention that a “word” is five characters, so speed does not depend on whether your words were short or long. Only words typed exactly right count, and each adds its letters plus one for the space after it.
The words come from a built-in list of common English words, put in random order, and the same word never appears twice in a row. They are plain lowercase words without punctuation, so the test measures letter typing, not shift keys.
Worked example
You type for 60 seconds and finish 42 words. 40 are exactly right and add up to 190 letters, plus 40 spaces, which is 230 characters.
- Speed: 230 ÷ 5 ÷ 1 minute = 46 WPM.
- Two words had a typo. In one, 4 of 5 letters were right; in the other, 3 of 6. Together with the 190 letters of the 40 perfect words that is 197 right letters out of 201, an accuracy of 98.0 %.
Tips
- Accuracy first. A wrong word scores nothing, so slowing down a little usually raises the result.
- Do not look at the keys. Keep your eyes on the highlighted word and the next ones.
- Compare like with like. Use the same length and keyboard each time; a short 30 second round varies more than a 120 second one.
