Add text to image

Choose a picture, add one or more text boxes and drag each one where you want it. Pick a font from a safe list that exists on almost every device, set the size, colour, outline and alignment, then download the result. Your picture stays on your device.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Choose a picture. A first text box appears in the middle.
  2. Type your text. Use a new line for several lines.
  3. Drag the box into place, or move it with the position sliders.
  4. Set the font, size, colour, outline width and alignment. Press Add text for another box and click a box name to edit it.
  5. Choose PNG or JPG and press Download.

How it works

Text is drawn on a canvas copy of your picture. For each box the lines are measured, the block is centred on the chosen point and the lines are placed 1.2 times the font size apart. Left alignment starts every line at the left edge of the block, right alignment ends them at the right edge. For example, lines 100 and 60 px wide at size 20, centred on (200, 100), make a block of 100 × 48 px at (150, 76); left-aligned lines start at x = 150, centred ones at x = 200, right-aligned ones at x = 250.

The outline is drawn first and the fill on top. The outline width is a percentage of the font size, so 12% on 80 px text is about 10 px.

Tips

  • Light text with a dark outline stays readable on busy photos.
  • Keep headlines short; long lines are not wrapped automatically, so add line breaks yourself.
  • Use JPG for photos you want to share quickly and PNG when you will edit the result again.

Frequently asked questions

How do I move the text?

Drag a text box with a mouse, finger or pen. If you prefer precise control, or dragging is awkward, use the horizontal and vertical position sliders for the selected box. Positions are stored as a share of the picture, so they stay put when the picture is saved at full size.

Which fonts can I use?

Six stacks of fonts that are installed on almost every computer and phone: Arial, Georgia, Courier, Impact, a handwriting style and the system default. Each stack lists fallbacks, so if one font is missing the next is used and the look can differ a little between devices.

How is the text size defined?

As a percentage of the picture width. 8% of a 1000 px wide picture gives 80 px text, and the saved file is drawn at the picture's full size so the text looks the same as in the preview.

How many text boxes can I add?

Up to 12. Each box has its own text, font, colour, outline and alignment. Boxes are drawn in order, so the one added last is on top.

PNG or JPG?

PNG is lossless and keeps text edges sharp. JPG gives a smaller file for photos; it is saved at quality 92 on a white background.
