Pad an image to a square
Choose a picture and the tool places it in the middle of a square canvas without cropping. Fill the extra space with a color, a blurred copy of the picture or transparency, add extra padding and pick the size. Nothing is uploaded.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Choose a picture.
- Pick a Background: a color, a blurred copy of the picture, or transparent.
- Add Extra padding if you want a margin, choose the size and the format, then press Download image.
How it works
The square side equals the longer side of the picture plus the padding on both ends. The picture is centered. A 800 × 600 picture with 0 % padding becomes 800 × 800 with the picture at y = 100. With 10 % padding the side is 960 and the picture sits at (80, 180). If you choose a fixed size, everything is scaled so that the side matches it, for example 480 gives a picture of 400 × 300 at (40, 90) for the case above.
Worked example
A wide product photo for a square profile slot: choose the blurred background, 5 % padding and 1080 px, and the whole product stays visible without white bars.
Tips
- Use PNG or WebP with a transparent background to place the result on any page color.
- Match the background color to the picture’s edge for a seamless look; the color box can be set to any value.
- Square pictures only get the padding.
Frequently asked questions
Is the picture cropped or stretched?
Neither. The whole picture is kept at its proportions and centered. Only the empty space around the shorter side is filled.
How is the extra padding measured?
As a percentage of the longer side, added on every edge. An 800 × 600 picture with 10 % padding gets 80 px on each edge, so the square is 960 px.
What does the blurred background look like?
The middle square of the picture is enlarged to fill the canvas and blurred, then the sharp picture is drawn on top. It is made without any filter function, so it also works in browsers that lack one.
What are the output size options?
Original scale keeps the pixel size of your picture and only adds space. The fixed sizes scale the whole square to 512, 1080 or 2048 px, which suits profile pictures and posts. Results are limited to 8192 px.
