Sticker maker

Open a PNG that already has a transparent background and the tool draws a thick outline around the visible shape, with an optional soft shadow, like a die-cut sticker. Pictures without transparency are outlined as a rectangle; remove the background first.

How to use it

  1. Open a PNG with a transparent background.
  2. Set the Outline width (0 to 60 px) and pick a colour; white is the classic sticker look.
  3. Keep Soft shadow on for a lifted look, or switch it off.
  4. Download the PNG; the transparent area around the sticker stays transparent.

How it works

The picture is placed on a larger transparent canvas. A distance map from the visible pixels is computed in two passes with weights 1 for sideways steps and the square root of 2 for diagonal steps. Pixels within the outline width get the outline colour, the optional shadow is drawn under it, and the original picture is drawn on top.

Worked example

One visible pixel followed by transparent pixels in a row has distances 0, 1, 2, 3 and so on. With an outline width of 2, pixels at distance 1 are fully filled, the pixel at distance 2 is half filled (the soft edge) and the one at distance 3 is empty.

Limitations

The tool does not cut subjects out of photos. Only the transparency already in the file defines the shape, and semi-transparent pixels below about half opacity count as empty.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my sticker outlined as a rectangle?

The outline follows the transparent pixels. A photo without transparency is solid all the way to its edges, so the outline goes around the rectangle. Cut the subject out first with the image background remover, save as PNG, then open it here.

How is the outline calculated?

For every pixel the tool measures the distance to the nearest visible pixel (alpha of at least 128) and fills those within the outline width, with a one-pixel soft edge. The distance uses a two-pass sweep that is exact along rows and columns and slightly approximate diagonally.

Is there a size limit?

Pictures with a side longer than 2000 pixels are scaled down before processing so the outline stays fast. The output is a PNG with room around the picture for the outline and shadow.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Everything runs on a canvas in your browser.
