Image grid overlay

Choose a photo and draw guide lines over it: the rule of thirds, golden-ratio lines, or a grid with the columns and rows you choose. Set colour, thickness and opacity, and download the image with the lines drawn on.

How to use it

  1. Choose a photo.
  2. Pick Rule of thirds, Golden ratio or Custom and, for custom, the number of columns and rows.
  3. Set the line colour, thickness (a percentage of the longer side) and opacity until the lines are visible on your photo.
  4. Choose PNG or JPG and download.

How it works

The photo is drawn on a canvas, then thin lines are stroked across it. Thirds are at 1/3 and 2/3 of each side; golden lines at 0.382 and 0.618; custom lines at k/n of the side. The line width is a percentage of the longer side, so the look is the same at any resolution. The preview is scaled down; the download uses the full size.

Worked example

On a 300 x 200 photo the thirds lines are vertical at x = 100 and 200 and horizontal at y = 66.7 and 133.3.

Tips

  • White lines work on dark photos and black ones on bright photos.
  • Use the custom grid with 2 columns and 2 rows to find the centre.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the golden-ratio lines?

At about 38.2% and 61.8% of the width and height, that is 1/phi squared and 1/phi, where phi is about 1.618. In a 1000 px wide picture the vertical lines are at about 382 and 618 px.

What is the rule of thirds?

A composition guideline that divides the picture into nine equal parts with two vertical and two horizontal lines. Placing a subject on a line or crossing is a rule of thumb, not a law.

How do the custom columns and rows work?

With 4 columns and 3 rows you get 3 vertical lines and 2 horizontal ones, dividing the image into 12 equal cells. Up to 50 each.

Is the picture changed?

Only in the downloaded copy, which has the lines drawn on it at the original size. The original file is untouched.
