Remove EXIF data

Choose one or more photos and download clean copies without location, camera details or comments. JPEG files keep the exact same picture data, because only the metadata blocks are cut out.

How to use it

  1. Leave Keep the rotation tag on if your photos come from a phone, or turn it off to remove every tag.
  2. Choose or drop one or more photos.
  3. For each file the list shows the sizes, the method and what was removed. Download it, or use Download all.

How it works

A JPEG begins with a header made of segments, followed by the compressed image. The tool walks through the segments, leaves out APP1, APP13 and comments, and copies everything else untouched, including the image data. Nothing is decoded or compressed again, so there is no quality loss and large photos are processed instantly. Files in other formats cannot be cut this way and are re-saved through a canvas instead.

Tips

  • Remove location data before posting photos of your home or your children.
  • The file name gets -clean added, and the original is never changed.
  • Metadata is usually only a few kilobytes, so the files do not get much smaller.

Frequently asked questions

Is the quality of a JPEG changed?

No. For JPEG files the tool removes only the metadata segments and copies the compressed picture data byte for byte, so the pixels and the file quality are identical.

What exactly is removed from a JPEG?

The APP1 blocks (EXIF and XMP), the APP13 block (Photoshop and IPTC data) and comment segments. Colour profiles are kept so colours do not shift.

What does the rotation option do?

Phones often store a photo sideways and add an orientation tag. If the tag is removed, the picture can show up rotated. With the option on, a tiny block with only that tag is written back; it holds no personal data. Turn it off to remove it as well.

How are PNG and WebP handled?

They are drawn onto a canvas and saved again in the same format, which keeps the pixels and drops all metadata. WebP is encoded again at high quality, so tiny differences are possible. Other formats become PNG.

How can I check that it worked?

Open the cleaned file in the EXIF viewer. It should report that no data was found, unless you kept the rotation tag.
