GIF maker

Add two or more pictures, put them in order, choose how long each one is shown and how often the animation repeats, then create and download the GIF. Everything is encoded in your browser by a built-in GIF writer, so your images are never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop two or more pictures. JPG, PNG, WebP and other formats your browser can open work.
  2. Arrange the frames with the arrows and remove those you do not need.
  3. Set the Frame delay in milliseconds (200 ms is five frames per second), the number of Plays and the Width of the GIF.
  4. Press Create GIF, check the preview and download it.

How it works

Every picture is drawn on a canvas of the chosen size and read back as pixels. For each frame the 256 most representative colors are chosen with median cut: the colors are repeatedly split into two groups along the channel with the widest range until 256 groups exist, and each group becomes one palette color. The pixels are then compressed with LZW, the method GIF specifies, and written as a GIF89a file with a local color table per frame.

Worked example

Ten 800 × 600 photos at a width of 400 px and a delay of 150 ms give ten 400 × 300 frames and an animation that lasts 1.5 seconds per pass.

Tips

  • Use pictures with the same proportions so nothing is padded with white bars.
  • A smaller width and fewer frames make a much smaller file.
  • For a slideshow, use a delay of 1000 ms or more and play it once or forever.

Frequently asked questions

How many pictures can I use?

Up to 100 frames, and the GIF can be up to 1200 pixels wide or tall. Large GIFs get big quickly, so for sharing, a width of 300 to 600 pixels is usually enough.

Why do the colors look slightly different from my photos?

A GIF frame can hold at most 256 colors. This tool picks the best 256 for every frame separately using median cut, but it does not add dithering, so smooth gradients may show bands. Flat graphics, screenshots and logos keep their colors almost exactly.

What is the shortest frame delay?

20 milliseconds. GIF stores delays in hundredths of a second, so values are rounded to the nearest 10 ms. Many browsers play delays of 10 ms or less as 100 ms, which is why shorter delays are not offered.

What happens to transparent pictures and to pictures of other shapes?

Transparent areas are filled with white. A picture with a different shape from the first one is scaled to fit inside the frame without stretching and centered on white.

How does the Plays number work?

0 means repeat forever. 1 writes no loop information, so the GIF plays once. For a larger number the file stores that number minus one repeats after the first play.
