Image mosaic maker

Choose a photo and it is rebuilt from tiles, each in the average colour of the part of the picture it covers. Choose the tile size and shape, the gap and colour of the grout, and a little shade variation so the tiles look hand-laid.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop a photo.
  2. Set the Tile size and the Grout gap.
  3. Choose Square or Round tiles and a Grout colour.
  4. Add some Shade variation for a hand-laid look, then download.

How it works

The picture is cut into a grid of squares of the chosen size. For each square the colours of all its pixels are averaged. The tile is drawn smaller than its square by the grout gap (a percentage of the tile size) on a background of the grout colour.

Example

On a 4 × 2 picture with tile size 2, the left tile averages four pixels. If they are 0, 100, 0 and 100 grey, the tile is grey 50.

Tips

  • Large tiles with round shape and a dark grout look like pebbles; small square tiles with thin grout look like a ceramic mosaic.
  • Photos with big areas of one colour need some shade variation, or the tiles look flat.

Frequently asked questions

How is each tile coloured?

Each tile takes the average colour of the pixels of the photo that lie under it. Then a small repeatable shade offset, up to the chosen variation, is added to the red, green and blue values so neighbouring tiles differ slightly.

How is this different from pixel art?

Pixel art keeps blocks touching and can limit the palette. The mosaic keeps the full colours but leaves grout between the tiles and can use round tiles, so it looks like real tile work.

What is the tile size measured in?

Pixels of the saved file. The same look needs a bigger tile for a large photo. Edge tiles are cut off where the picture ends.

Is this a photo mosaic made of many small photos?

No. Each tile is a single colour, not a small picture.
