GIF speed changer

Open an animated GIF, choose a speed from 0.25x to 4x or type your own, and download the result. The tool edits the delay stored with each frame and leaves the pixel data untouched, so there is no quality loss and no change to colours or size.

Everything happens in your browser. Your files are never uploaded.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Open an animated GIF.
  2. Choose a preset speed or type your own between 0.1 and 10. Above 1 is faster, below 1 is slower.
  3. Check the duration before and after, and the preview.
  4. Download the GIF.

How it works

A GIF stores a Graphic Control Extension before each frame, and the frame delay is two bytes in it, counted in hundredths of a second. The tool walks all blocks, finds those delay fields and writes new values: the effective delay divided by the speed, rounded, and not less than 2. Everything else in the file is copied byte for byte.

Worked example

Frames of 10, 20 and 6 hundredths (0.36 s per loop) at 2x become 5, 10 and 3 hundredths, a loop of 0.18 s.

Tips

  • Slowing down is exact. Speeding up a GIF that is already fast may hit the 0.02 s floor.
  • To change the frames themselves, use the GIF maker or split the GIF into frames.

Frequently asked questions

Does this re-encode the GIF?

No. The tool reads the GIF block by block and changes only the two bytes that hold each frame's delay. Images, palettes and everything else are copied unchanged, so the file size stays the same.

What is the fastest speed a GIF can have?

Delays are stored in hundredths of a second. This tool never writes less than 2 (0.02 s), because browsers treat very small delays unreliably. Frames that are already at that limit cannot go faster.

Why do frames with a delay of 0 become longer?

Browsers play a stored delay of 0 or 1 as 0.1 s, so the tool treats those frames as 0.1 s before applying the speed, keeping the result consistent with what you see.

Is the GIF uploaded?

No. The file is read and rewritten in your browser.
