Camera capabilities checker
Press Start, allow camera access and the page reads the capabilities of the camera track, shows them in a table, and then stops the camera right away. No picture is shown, recorded or uploaded.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Choose a camera, or leave the default.
- Press Check camera and allow access.
- Read the table of properties. Entries such as
zoom, focusMode and torch appear only if your browser and camera report them.
What the columns mean
- Property is the standard name from the browser’s media settings, such as width, height, frameRate, facingMode, aspectRatio.
- Supported is the range or list of options the page may ask for.
- Current is the value in use for the opened stream.
Worked example
If width shows 1 – 1920 and height 1 – 1080, the maximum resolution row reads 1920 × 1080, and a frameRate of 0 – 30 means up to 30 frames per second.
Tips
- Close video-call apps before checking, or the camera may report as busy.
- Use the same page on the front and the back camera of a phone to compare them.
- Capabilities are for pages in your browser. Native camera apps can use more.
Frequently asked questions
Is my camera image recorded or uploaded?
No. The page opens the camera to read the track's capabilities and settings, does not show or save any picture, and stops all tracks as soon as the reading is done.
Why do I get fewer properties in some browsers?
The capabilities method is not equally complete in all browsers. Where it is missing, the page shows only the current settings. Focus, zoom and torch appear only if your browser and camera report them.
What does the supported range mean?
It is the minimum and maximum the browser lets a page request for that property, for example width from 1 to 1920. The current column shows what the camera is delivering now.
Why is the maximum resolution lower than my camera's megapixels?
The browser reports video stream sizes, not photo sizes. A 12-megapixel phone camera usually offers video up to 4K or less in a web page.
Why does the camera name look empty?
Browsers show device names only after permission, and some leave the field blank for privacy.
