Geolocation viewer

Press a button and allow location access. The page shows exactly what the browser's Geolocation API returns. The reading stays in your browser; nothing is uploaded and no map tiles are loaded unless you click the map link.

Nothing is read until you press a button.

The position is read by your browser and shown here only. Nothing is sent to this site or anywhere else. The map link goes to openstreetmap.org only if you click it. Altitude, speed and heading are often missing on laptops.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Press Get my position once for a single reading, or Follow my position for live updates.
  2. Allow location access when the browser asks.
  3. Read the coordinates and the accuracy radius. Press Stop to end following.

How it works

The page calls getCurrentPosition or watchPosition with high accuracy requested. Following stops when you press Stop, leave the page or switch tab.

Worked example

A reading of 48.85660° N, 2.35220° E with accuracy 25 m means the device is probably within 25 metres of that point. Speed is shown in m/s and km/h: 10 m/s × 3.6 = 36 km/h.

Tips

  • Indoors the accuracy radius is much larger; go outdoors for a GPS fix.
  • Negative latitude is shown as S and negative longitude as W.
  • Altitude comes from the device and may be relative to the ellipsoid, not sea level.

Frequently asked questions

Is my location sent anywhere?

No. The page asks your browser for the position and prints it. There is no upload, and the page loads no map. The optional map link opens openstreetmap.org in a new tab only when you click it.

What does the accuracy number mean?

It is a radius in metres. The browser says the true position is within that distance of the point shown with about 68 % confidence. Wi-Fi or IP based fixes are often hundreds of metres or more, GPS outdoors a few metres.

Why are altitude, speed and heading empty?

Those values need GPS hardware and, for speed and heading, movement. Laptops usually locate by Wi-Fi or IP and return nothing for them.

Why does it say permission denied?

You or your browser blocked location for this site. Allow it in the address bar or site settings, and check that location services are on in the system settings.
