Everything stays in your browser. Only the first 8 characters of each device ID are shown, because the full ID can identify your device. Some browsers do not list audio outputs.

How to use it

Press List devices.
If names are missing, press Allow access to show names and accept the browser’s prompt.
Plug in or remove a device and watch the list refresh.

How it works

The page calls navigator.mediaDevices.enumerateDevices() and groups the results by kind: video input, audio input and audio output. The allow button opens a short camera and microphone stream, stops it right away and lists again.

Worked example

A laptop with a built-in webcam, a headset microphone and speakers lists 1 camera, 1 microphone and 1 output once permission has been given. Before permission each shows as “Unnamed device 1”.

Tips

The same physical device can appear twice, for example as a default entry and a named one.
To test a device, use the webcam, microphone or speaker test tools.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the names empty?

Browsers hide device names until the site has permission to use a camera or microphone. Press the second button and allow access once.

Does the page record anything?

No. The allow button opens the devices only to make the browser reveal names, and stops them immediately.

Why are there no speakers in the list?

Some browsers, including Safari and older Firefox versions, do not report audio outputs.

Does the list update when I plug something in?

Yes. After the first listing the page listens for device changes and refreshes the list.
