Mute video
Choose a video and the tool records only its picture, so the new file has no audio track. It is useful for clips that you want to share or put music under without the original sound.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Choose a video file.
- Press Remove sound. The clip plays through once while its picture is recorded.
- Check the preview, then download the silent video.
How it works
The video is played into a canvas, and only the canvas is passed to the recorder. No audio is routed in, so the output contains no sound. The whole video is used; to keep a part only, trim it first.
Worked example
A 45 s phone clip with background noise becomes a 45 s clip with picture only, and it takes about 45 s to produce.
Tips
- Check the result with the volume up: the player should show no sound.
- Add your own music in a video editor afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Does the new video have an audio track at all?
No. Only the picture is recorded, so the file has no audio track, not a silent one.
Why does it take as long as the video?
The browser has no built-in way to convert a video file, so the tool plays the clip into a canvas and records the canvas with MediaRecorder. That happens at playing speed: a 1-minute clip takes about a minute (half that at 2x speed). Keep the tab open and visible, because browsers slow down background tabs.
Which file format do I get?
WebM in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, which can be played by those browsers and most players. Safari records MP4 instead. The original format is not kept, because the clip is recorded again from the picture the browser shows.
Will the quality drop?
A little. The result is encoded a second time by the browser's recorder, and encoding twice always loses some detail. Short clips at normal sizes usually look fine, but this is not a lossless cut.
