How to use it

  1. Click squares on the grid to place hits. Every fourth square is shaded to mark the beats.
  2. Press Play or the space bar. The current step is outlined.
  3. Set the Tempo and Swing, or load a preset and change it.
  4. Click a drum name or press 1 to 8 to hear it on its own.

How it works

Steps are booked a short time ahead on the audio clock, so the rhythm stays steady even when the page is busy. One step lasts 60 ÷ BPM ÷ 4 seconds. The pattern is a loop of 16 steps, one bar of 4/4.

Worked example

At 90 BPM a step lasts 60 ÷ 90 ÷ 4 = 0.1667 s, and the bar lasts 2.67 s. Kick on steps 1, 5, 9 and 13 gives a four-on-the-floor beat.

Tips

  • Start with kick and snare, then add hats; fewer hits often sound better.
  • On a phone, slide the grid sideways to reach the last steps.

Frequently asked questions

How long is one step?

One step is a sixteenth note: 60 divided by the tempo, divided by 4. At 120 BPM that is 0.125 s, so the 16 steps make one 4/4 bar of 2 seconds.

What does swing do?

Swing delays every second step by a share of a step. At 0% the beat is straight; at 50% the delayed steps are pushed half a step later, which gives a shuffle feel.

How are the drum sounds made?

Each is generated by Web Audio with oscillators and filtered noise, for example a falling sine for the kick and noise through a high-pass filter for the hats. There are no sample files.

Why does it stay silent until I press Play?

Browsers allow audio only after a click or key press. Pressing Play or trying a drum unlocks it.
