Approximate only. The count comes from a simple peak-detection rule and will differ from a fitness band or health app. Do not use it for medical decisions. The page must stay open and in front. Data stays on your device.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. On a phone, press Start (allow motion access if asked).
  2. Walk with the phone in your hand, keeping the page open.
  3. Watch steps, time, steps per minute and approximate distance.
  4. Press Stop to freeze the count or Reset to clear it.

How it works

The page listens to devicemotion, takes the size of the acceleration including gravity, follows gravity with a running average, and counts a step when the signal rises above it by more than 1.5 m/s² at least 0.3 seconds after the previous step.

Worked example

100 steps with a stride of 70 cm gives 100 × 70 / 100 = 70 m. 90 steps in one minute is a cadence of 90 steps per minute.

Tips

  • Hold the phone steady in one hand or keep it in a front pocket for the most regular signal.
  • Measure your own stride by walking 10 steps and dividing the distance by 10.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is it?

Not very. It counts peaks in the acceleration signal, which depends on how you carry the phone, your pace and the sensor. Expect it to over- or undercount by a noticeable margin.

Why does my iPhone ask for permission?

Safari requires an explicit permission for motion data. The page asks only after you tap Start.

Does it work with the screen off?

No. Browsers pause sensor events for background or hidden pages, so keep the page open and the screen on.

How is distance calculated?

Steps times the stride length you enter in centimetres. The default of 70 cm is a placeholder, so set your own.
