Resolution and frame rate
—

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Press Start camera and choose Allow in the browser prompt.
  2. Check the picture, focus and lighting in the preview.
  3. If you have several cameras, pick one in the Camera list.
  4. Press Save snapshot to download the current frame as a PNG file.
  5. Press Stop to turn the camera off. This releases it, so its indicator light goes out.

What is shown

The resolution and frame rate come from the video track’s settings, for example 1280×720 · 30 fps. They describe what the browser is giving the page right now; a call app may request something different.

The preview is shown as the camera sees it, not mirrored, so text held in front of the lens appears reversed only if the camera itself mirrors it.

Worked example

A laptop camera reports 1280×720 at 30 fps. That is 720p: 1280 × 720 = 921 600 pixels per frame, about 0.9 megapixels, enough for most video calls. A 1920×1080 camera has 2 073 600 pixels, 2.25 times as many.

Tips

  • Light matters more than resolution. Face a window or lamp instead of sitting with light behind you.
  • Permission is per site. If you blocked the camera once, reset it in the address-bar site settings.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video recorded or uploaded?

No. The picture goes from the camera to the preview on this page and nowhere else. The snapshot is made on your device and saved only when you press the button.

Where do the resolution and fps numbers come from?

From the settings the browser reports for the active camera track. Some browsers do not report the frame rate, in which case only the resolution is shown. The values are what the browser negotiated, which can be lower than the camera's maximum.

How do I switch between cameras?

Once access is granted and more than one camera is found, a Camera list appears. Choose another entry and the preview restarts with it. Names appear only after you grant permission.

The preview is black. What can I do?

Check that the camera shutter or privacy switch is open, that no other app is using the camera, and that the right camera is selected. Then press Stop and Start camera again.
