Display color gamut checker

Press Check and the page asks your browser a few media queries: the color-gamut, dynamic-range, video-dynamic-range and color depth. It shows the widest gamut your display reports and two red swatches for a quick look.

—Press the button to read your display's color features.

These are the answers your browser gives, not lab measurements. The browser may report less than the hardware can do, and the area figure is a rule of thumb for the gamut size in the CIE 1931 xy chart, not for your panel.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Press Check display.
  2. Read the Color gamut and the Dynamic range rows.
  3. If shown, compare the two red swatches.

What the rows mean

  • Color gamut is the widest of sRGB, Display P3 and Rec. 2020 that your browser reports.
  • Dynamic range and HDR video show high-dynamic-range support.
  • Bits per color channel is the largest value of the min-color media query that matches. Screen color depth is the browser’s screen.colorDepth.

Worked example

If both the sRGB and P3 queries match and the Rec. 2020 query does not, the page reports Display P3. A screen colorDepth of 24 means 8 bits for each of red, green and blue.

Tips

  • Turn on the wide-color or HDR option in your operating system’s display settings and check again.
  • Different browsers on one computer can report different gamuts because of color management.
  • Use the color banding test for smoothness of gradients.

Frequently asked questions

What is a color gamut?

It is the range of colors a screen can show. sRGB is the standard for the web, Display P3 is wider and is common in recent phones, Macs and some monitors, and Rec. 2020 is wider still.

How does the page find the gamut?

It tests the CSS media query color-gamut for srgb, p3 and rec2020 and reports the widest that matches. A wider gamut also matches the narrower ones.

What does HDR here mean?

It is the dynamic-range media query returning high, which means the screen and system can show brighter highlights than standard displays. It does not say how bright the display is.

Why do I see 8 bits when I think my screen is 10-bit?

The color depth query reports what the browser and system expose to pages. A 10-bit panel may report 8 if the operating system or driver is set to 8-bit output.

Does the swatch comparison prove a wide gamut?

It is a quick visual check. Display P3 red is more saturated than sRGB red only on a screen that can reproduce it, and the difference can be subtle.
