Online voice recorder
Press Record, allow the microphone, and talk. A timer and a level meter show that sound is coming in. Stop to listen back and download the clip. The recording lives only in this tab's memory until you save it or close the page.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Press Record and allow microphone access.
- Speak. Use Pause and Resume for breaks; the timer only counts while recording.
- Press Stop. A player appears so you can listen to it.
- Press Download to save the file, or Discard to start again.
How it works
The page opens the microphone with getUserMedia and feeds it to a MediaRecorder. It asks the browser which container it supports, in this order: WebM/Opus, then MP4/AAC for Safari, then Ogg/Opus. The recorded chunks are joined into one file in memory and offered as a download link. The level meter is the root-mean-square of the live signal.
Worked example
You record 12 s, pause, then record 8 s more. The timer shows 0:20, because paused time is not counted. On Chrome the file is named like recording-2026-11-03-1415.webm.
Tips
- Hold the phone or microphone steady and 10–20 cm from your mouth to avoid pops.
- Check the meter before you start: it should move clearly but not sit at the far right.
- If you need MP3, convert the downloaded file with a separate tool; browsers do not record MP3 directly.
Frequently asked questions
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. The audio is recorded by your browser and held in memory on your device. The only way it leaves the page is when you press Download. Closing or reloading the tab discards it.
Which file format do I get?
The browser decides. Chrome, Edge and Firefox record WebM with Opus audio, which is saved as a .webm file. Safari records MP4 with AAC, saved as .m4a. The format and size are shown after you stop.
Why is the level meter not moving?
Either nothing is being picked up or the wrong input is selected in your system sound settings. Tap the microphone or speak and watch the meter. The meter only moves while you are recording, not when paused.
How long can I record?
There is no limit in the tool, but the clip is kept in memory, so very long recordings use a lot of RAM. The file size is shown after you stop.
