Online flashlight

Tap Screen light and the whole display turns into a lamp. Drag the sliders to dim it or shift it toward a warmer, easier-on-the-eyes colour. The page asks the browser to keep the screen on while it is lit. A real camera torch is available only on some Android phones in Chrome.

The brightness slider dims the colour on screen. To make the screen as bright as possible, also raise your device brightness in system settings.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Set the brightness and colour temperature with the sliders, or leave them at full white.
  2. Press Screen light. The page goes full screen. Use the bar at the bottom to adjust, then Close (or Esc) to leave.
  3. For a real torch on a supported Android phone, press Camera torch and allow the camera.

How it works

The colour comes from a standard blackbody approximation: red, green and blue are computed from the temperature in kelvin, then scaled by the brightness percentage. At 6500 K the result is about rgb(255, 254, 250); at 2700 K it is about rgb(255, 167, 87). The Wake Lock API keeps the display on and is requested again if you switch tabs and come back. For the torch, the page opens the rear camera and applies the torch constraint to its video track if the camera reports it.

Worked example

Brightness 50 % at 2700 K takes the warm colour and halves each channel: 255, 167, 87 becomes rgb(128, 84, 44), a dim amber light for reading in a dark room.

Tips

  • A screen light is not strong enough to light a large room. It is good for finding things nearby or a night-time light.
  • Screen brightness cannot be set by a web page, so use your device’s brightness control for the maximum.

Frequently asked questions

Can a website turn on my phone's flashlight?

Only sometimes. Chrome on many Android phones lets a page switch on the camera torch after you allow camera access. iPhone and most other browsers do not allow it, so this tool falls back to the screen light and tells you so.

Why does the camera ask for permission?

The torch is controlled through the rear camera, so the browser needs camera access to reach it. The page does not record or read any image, and the camera is released when you turn the torch off.

Does the screen stay on?

The page requests a screen wake lock, which stops the display from turning off while the light is open. Most current browsers support it. If yours does not, the page says so, and you may need to raise the screen timeout in system settings.

What does the temperature slider do?

It sets the light colour from 2000 K (orange, like a candle or a very warm bulb) to 6500 K (close to white daylight). Warmer light is easier on the eyes in a dark room.
