Golden birthday calculator

A golden birthday, sometimes called a champagne birthday, is the one where your new age equals the day of the month you were born on: turning 21 on 21 May, or 8 on the 8th. Enter a date of birth to see when it is (or was), how old you will be and the day of the week.

How to use it

  1. Pick a date of birth.
  2. Read the golden birthday: the date, your age that day and the weekday.

Nothing depends on today’s date, so you can look up a past golden birthday as well as a future one, or check one for a friend or a child.

How it works

The age on the golden birthday is the day of the month you were born on, d. The date is your birthday in the year birth year + d.

The one special case is 29 February: the 29th birthday usually falls in a common year, so it is placed on 28 February.

Worked example

Born on 21 May 1995: the day of the month is 21, so the golden birthday is at age 21, in 1995 + 21 = 2016.

  • Golden birthday: May 21, 2016.
  • Age: 21.
  • Day of the week: Saturday.

Born on 29 February 1996: age 29 comes in 2025, which has no 29 February, so the date shown is February 28, 2025, a Friday.

Ideas

  • Parties for a golden birthday often use gold decorations or the number in candles.
  • For a child born early in the month the date is close: born on the 3rd, it is the third birthday.
  • To plan ahead, compare with your half birthday or other milestone dates.

Frequently asked questions

What is a golden birthday?

The birthday on which your age is the same number as the day of the month you were born. Someone born on 15 March has a golden birthday on 15 March when they turn 15.

Does everyone have a golden birthday?

Yes, exactly one, because the day of the month is between 1 and 31. People born on the 1st have it on their first birthday; people born on the 31st wait until 31.

What if I was born on 29 February?

You turn 29 in a year that is usually not a leap year. The calculator then puts the birthday on 28 February, the convention most age calculators use, and says so; you might prefer to celebrate on 1 March.

Can I look up a golden birthday that has already passed?

Yes. The result does not depend on today's date: if it has passed, the calculator shows the date and the weekday it fell on.
