Dice roller

Choose how many dice and how many sides, then roll. Each die is independent and fair, and the total is shown under the individual results.

Total: 0

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Set the number of dice with the slider (1 to 10).
  2. Choose the number of sides: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 or 20.
  3. Press Roll. The individual values and the total appear on the right.

How the odds work

One fair die gives every face the same chance, 1 in the number of sides. Adding dice changes that: with two six-sided dice there are 36 combinations, only one of which makes 2, while six of them make 7. That is why 7 is the most common total of 2d6, with a probability of 6/36, about 16.7 percent.

Example

3d6 for a tabletop character stat: three dice give a total between 3 and 18, and the middle totals (10 and 11) are the most likely.

Tips

  • A d20 gives each number from 1 to 20 a 5 percent chance.
  • For a custom range such as 1 to 100, use the random number generator.

Frequently asked questions

Are the dice fair?

Yes. Each die is a uniform random integer from 1 to the number of sides, drawn from the browser's cryptographically secure generator with rejection sampling, so no face is favoured.

What does 2d6 or 3d8 mean?

The number before the d is how many dice you roll and the number after is how many sides each has. 2d6 is two six-sided dice added together. Set the slider to 2 and choose d6.

Can I roll different dice together?

Not in one roll. Roll one kind at a time and add the totals, for instance a d20 for an attack and then 2d6 for damage.

What is the d10 range?

A d10 here gives 1 to 10. Some tabletop games use a 0 to 9 d10 for percentile rolls; subtract 1, or roll two d10 and read them as tens and units.
