Yes or no generator
Think of a question, press the button, and read the answer. Yes and no are equally likely, or turn on maybe for three equal outcomes. The answer comes from your browser's secure random generator, with a history of recent answers below.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Think of a question that can be answered yes or no.
- Press Ask. The answer appears in large letters.
- Tick Include ‘maybe’ if you want a third option. Press Clear history to start over.
How it works
The tool draws a random whole number with no bias: 0 or 1 for yes and no, or 0, 1 or 2 when maybe is on. Each press is independent, so earlier answers do not change the next one.
Tips
- Decide what each answer will mean before you press the button.
- If you ask again hoping for a different answer, you already know what you want.
Frequently asked questions
Is the answer really random?
Yes. It is a fair draw using crypto.getRandomValues. Without maybe, yes and no each have a 50 percent chance; with maybe on, each of the three has a one in three chance.
Does the question I think of matter?
No. The tool never sees your question, and the result does not depend on it. It is a coin with words on it.
Can it help me make a real decision?
It can help you notice what you hope for. If you feel disappointed by an answer, that is useful information. For important choices, weigh the facts rather than rely on chance.
How is this different from the coin flip?
The coin flip tracks heads and tails with a spinning coin. This page is built for yes or no questions, can add a maybe, and keeps the last ten answers.
