What the card looks like

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
N:Lovelace;Ada;;;
FN:Ada Lovelace
ORG:Analytical Engines Ltd
TEL;TYPE=CELL:+44 20 7946 0000
EMAIL;TYPE=INTERNET:ada@example.com
END:VCARD

N holds last name and first name, FN is the display name, TEL and EMAIL carry a type, and the address goes into ADR as street, city, region, postal code, country. Lines end with CRLF.

Tips

Include the country code in phone numbers (+44, +1) so they work from anywhere. For a business card, print the code at least 2 cm wide and test it on two phones. If you only need a link, use the plain QR code generator instead, because a shorter text makes a simpler code.

Frequently asked questions

What is a vCard?

A vCard (.vcf file) is the standard text format for contact cards, defined in RFC 2426 for version 3.0. Phones, Outlook, Apple Contacts and Google Contacts can import it. The QR code carries the same text, so scanning it saves the contact.

Why is the .vcf text different from the QR text?

The .vcf file folds lines longer than 75 bytes onto continuation lines that start with a space, as the format requires. The QR text is not folded, which keeps the code a little smaller; scanners read both.

How much can the code hold?

Up to 2,331 bytes at the error correction level used here (M). A typical contact is 150–400 bytes. The more text, the denser and harder to scan the code becomes.

Are commas and semicolons in my text a problem?

No. Backslash, comma and semicolon are escaped with a backslash and line breaks become \n, so "Smith, Jones; Ltd" stays one company name.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The card and the QR code are produced in your browser, and nothing is stored.
