PIN generator

Set a length and press the button for random PINs. Switch on the filters to skip all-same PINs such as 1111, sequences such as 1234 or 4321, repeated digits and numbers that look like a year (19xx, 20xx). Digits come from your browser's cryptographic random source.

Your PINs

  • • • • •

10,000 possible PINs of this length before filters.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Set the length of the PIN and how many you want.
  2. Switch on the filters you need. By default the tool skips PINs of one digit and runs like 123 or 4321.
  3. Press New PINs and copy one.

The filters

Filter Skips Example
No digit twice any PIN with a repeated digit 1213
No PINs of one digit all digits equal 7777
No runs three or more digits going up or down by one 1234, 8765 (8901 is allowed)
No years 4-digit PINs starting with 19 or 20 1987, 2024

Checked by hand

An unrestricted 4-digit PIN has 10^4 = 10,000 possibilities. The year filter removes 200 of them (19xx is 100, 20xx is 100). No digit twice leaves 10 × 9 × 8 × 7 = 5,040. The filters remove only the most guessable PINs, so what is left is still large.

Tips

Never use a birth date, a phone number or your house number as a PIN. Use a different PIN for each card.

Frequently asked questions

How does the filter keep the PIN random?

The tool draws digits at random and throws away any PIN that breaks a filter, then draws again. Every PIN that passes is equally likely. It does not shuffle or adjust digits, which would make some PINs more likely than others.

What counts as a sequence?

Three or more digits in a row, each one more than the last (123, 3456) or each one less (321, 9876). The digit 9 followed by 0 is not counted as a step, so 8901 is allowed.

Does 'no digit twice' make a PIN stronger?

No, it makes it a little weaker, because there are fewer possible PINs. It is useful only when a system forbids repeats. A 4-digit PIN has 10,000 possibilities; with no repeated digit it has 5,040.

How safe is a 4-digit PIN?

A random 4-digit PIN is only as safe as the limit on guesses: a card or phone that locks after a few wrong tries makes it hard to guess, while a system with unlimited tries makes it weak. Where you can choose, use more digits.
