Why riddles work

A riddle describes something in an unusual way, so the solver has to look at it from a new angle. Good riddles make the answer feel obvious once you hear it.

Frequently asked questions

How do the levels differ?

Kids riddles describe everyday things and animals in simple words. Family riddles use classic wordplay that older children and adults enjoy. Tricky riddles are short puzzles with a twist.

Are the answers shown?

Yes, each riddle ends with its answer. To play, read only the question, or copy the list and hide the answers.

Can I use these in class or at a party?

Yes. Draw a set, copy it into a document and read them out. The list is kept family-friendly.

Do riddles repeat?

Not within one draw. Across draws the same riddle can return, because the list is finite.

Are all riddles original?

The wording is written for this tool. Some of the underlying ideas, such as a clock with hands or a river with a bank, are old, widely told riddle themes.
