Mailto link generator
Fill in who the email goes to, a subject and a message, and get a mailto: link that opens the visitor's mail app with everything ready. Spaces, line breaks and special characters are percent-encoded for you, and bad-looking addresses are flagged.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Enter one or more recipient addresses.
- Add Cc, Bcc, a subject and a message if you want them pre-filled.
- Copy the link or the HTML snippet and paste it into your page, email signature or QR code.
How it works
The address list goes after mailto:. The other fields become cc=, bcc=, subject= and body= pairs. Values pass through encodeURIComponent, and line breaks are first turned into CRLF so mail apps keep the paragraphs.
Example: To hello@example.com, subject Hi there gives mailto:hello@example.com?subject=Hi%20there.
Tips
- A visible address on the page is still better for people without a mail app set up.
- Do not put secrets in the body: the link is plain text.
- Test the link in the mail apps your visitors use.
Frequently asked questions
How does a mailto link work?
A link that starts with mailto: opens the default email program. After the address, a question mark starts the header fields such as subject and body, joined with &. The format is defined in RFC 6068.
How are spaces and line breaks encoded?
Spaces become %20, not +, because a plus sign would be shown literally in some mail apps. Line breaks in the message become %0D%0A. Other special characters are percent-encoded.
Can I send to several people?
Yes. Separate addresses with commas in To, Cc or Bcc. The tool joins them with commas in the link.
Why is there a length warning?
Browsers and mail apps limit how long a link can be, and the safe size varies. The 2000-character warning is a rule of thumb: very long messages are better sent from a form.
Does it send the email?
No. The link only opens the visitor's mail app with a draft. They still have to press send.
