Random letter generator
Get one letter or up to 1,000. Limit the pool to vowels or consonants, choose upper or lower case, and turn on no-repeat to deal letters like cards from a deck. Useful for games, drills and picking a starting letter.
Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Set How many letters (1 to 1,000).
- Choose All letters, Vowels or Consonants, then upper or lower case.
- Tick No repeated letters if each letter may appear only once.
- Press Generate again or Copy. Changing any setting also draws a new result.
How it works
Each letter is chosen with an unbiased random index into the pool. With no-repeat on, the chosen letter is taken out of the pool before the next draw, which is the same as dealing from a shuffled deck.
Tips
- For a random word rather than letters, try the random word generator.
- Use five or six consonants plus two vowels for quick word-building games.
Frequently asked questions
Which letters count as vowels?
A, E, I, O and U. The other 21 letters of the English alphabet are consonants. Y is treated as a consonant here.
Are all letters equally likely?
Yes. Each letter in the chosen set has the same chance, unlike letter frequencies in real English text, where E and T are far more common than Q or Z.
What does 'No repeated letters' do?
Once a letter is drawn it is removed from the pool, so each letter appears at most once. You can ask for up to 26 letters from all, 5 from vowels and 21 from consonants.
Can I use this for games like Scattergories?
Yes. Draw one letter and everyone must find a word that starts with it. Turn off repeats if you want to play several rounds without reusing a letter.
