Wi-Fi QR code generator

Enter your network name and password and get a QR code that phones can scan to join the network. The password is used only in this page and is never sent anywhere.

Security

Text inside the code

WIFI:T:WPA;S:HomeWiFi;P:correct-horse-9;;

The code is made in your browser. Your network name and password are not uploaded or stored.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Type the network name exactly as it appears on your phone, including capitals.
  2. Choose the security type and enter the password.
  3. Tick Hidden network if the router does not broadcast its name.
  4. Download the code as PNG or SVG and print it, or show it on a screen.

What is inside the code

The code holds plain text in the form WIFI:T:WPA;S:HomeWiFi;P:correct-horse-9;;:

  • T is the security type (WPA, WEP or nopass),
  • S is the network name, P the password,
  • H:true is added for a hidden network,
  • the text ends with two semicolons.

The characters \ ; , : " are escaped with a backslash. A network called Cafe;Guest is written S:Cafe\;Guest.

Tips

Use an error correction level that survives printing: this tool uses level M (about 15% damage tolerated). Print the code at least 3 cm wide on a plain light background. For a guest network, make a separate network with its own password, so changing it does not disturb your own devices.

Frequently asked questions

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. The QR code is generated by JavaScript on this page and the password stays in your browser. Remember that anyone who scans the code, or sees a printout, can read the password from it.

Which phones can scan it?

Current iPhones and Android phones read Wi-Fi QR codes with the normal camera app and offer to join the network. Older Android versions may need a QR scanner app.

What do WPA, WEP and "No password" mean?

The security type is written into the code as T:WPA, T:WEP or T:nopass. Choose WPA for any modern router, including WPA2 and WPA3. WEP is obsolete and insecure; use it only for old equipment. For an open network the password is left out.

Why is the password limited to 8–63 characters?

A WPA passphrase must be 8 to 63 characters, and a network name at most 32 bytes. For WEP only the password field being non-empty is checked, because its key rules depend on the key length.

Special characters in the name or password?

Backslash, semicolon, comma, colon and double quote have a meaning in the code format, so each is written with a backslash in front. This is done for you; the text under the code shows exactly what is encoded.
