WhatsApp link generator

Type a phone number with its country code and a message, and get a wa.me link that opens a chat with the text ready to send. The number is cleaned to digits and the message is URL-encoded for you. Nothing is sent anywhere.

International format, country code first. Spaces, dashes and + are removed. Leave empty to let the person pick a contact.

Runs in your browser: nothing you enter is sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Enter the phone number with the country code, or leave it empty for a share link.
  2. Write the message people should start with. Line breaks are kept.
  3. Copy the link, open it to test, or copy the HTML snippet for a web page.

How it works

The tool removes everything except digits from the number and drops leading zeros, then checks that 8 to 15 digits remain. The message goes through encodeURIComponent, so spaces become %20, line breaks %0A and & becomes %26.

Example: +44 7911 123456 with the text Hello! gives https://wa.me/447911123456?text=Hello!.

Tips

  • Put the link behind a button or a QR code to let customers start a chat in one tap.
  • Keep the pre-filled text short and neutral; the person can edit it before sending.
  • Test the link on a phone that has the app and on one that does not.

Frequently asked questions

What format does the link use?

https://wa.me/<number>?text=<message>. The number is in full international format without plus signs, spaces, dashes or leading zeros, and the message is URL-encoded. This is the click-to-chat format WhatsApp documents.

Can I leave the phone number empty?

Yes. The link becomes https://wa.me/?text=<message>. When opened, WhatsApp lets the person choose who to send the message to, which is handy for share buttons.

Why does my local number not work?

The link needs the country code. A number written as 07911 123456 has to become 447911123456 for the UK. The tool strips leading zeros but cannot guess your country, so it warns when the number starts with a single 0.

Does the recipient need to be in my contacts?

No. The link opens a chat with that number whether or not it is saved in your phone, as long as the number is on WhatsApp.

Is my number sent to your server?

No. The link is built in your browser and nothing is stored or uploaded.
