Dot grid paper generator

Choose the spacing between dots, the dot size and the margins, look at the preview and download a PDF for A4 or Letter. Dot grids give you guides without the visual weight of lines. Nothing leaves your browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose the paper and units.
  2. Enter the dot spacing and margin; pick a dot size and colour.
  3. Download the PDF or print the preview.

How it works

The tool fits whole spacings into the area inside the margins, centres the dot block on the page, and places a dot at every crossing, including the outer edges of the block.

Example

A4 portrait, 5 mm spacing, 10 mm margin: 38 spaces across and 55 down, so 39 × 56 = 2184 dots.

Tips

  • Use a lighter colour for notes you will write over in ink.
  • Print at actual size; “fit to page” changes the spacing.

Frequently asked questions

What spacing is usual for a dot grid?

Many bullet-journal notebooks use 5 mm between dots, and 1/4 in is the usual imperial equivalent. This tool accepts 2.5 mm up to 30 mm.

Can I change the dot size?

Yes: small, medium or large. They are 0.8, 1.2 and 1.8 points across, which show up lighter or heavier depending on your printer.

Why are dots missing near the edges?

The grid is centred inside the margin, and only whole spacings fit, so the outer dots sit a little inside the margin.

Does it work for sketching on a tablet?

You can save the PDF and open it in any note-taking app that imports PDFs. How it is used there depends on that app.
